Once the main cabinets are installed, finishing details such as crown molding, toe kicks, shoe molding, fillers and scribe molding typically require another 2–4 hours, depending on the design.

The goal isn’t simply to install the cabinets quickly.

It Starts With the Kitchen Cabinet Plan

Before the first cabinet gets fastened to the wall, we review the cabinet manufacturer’s layout.

A professional cabinet plan tells us much more than where each cabinet belongs. It identifies cabinet widths, wall cabinet locations, appliance openings, fillers, finished panels, refrigerator surrounds, crown molding, island dimensions and specialty pieces.

That plan becomes the starting point.

But a cabinet drawing never replaces checking the actual house.

Before installation begins, we compare the plan against the physical kitchen to make sure the room, rough plumbing, electrical locations, appliance openings and cabinet runs make sense in the real space.

Cabinet plans give our installation team the starting dimensions, cabinet locations, appliance openings and trim requirements before installation begins.

Step 1: We Stage and Verify the Cabinets

Organization makes a significant difference on a cabinet installation.

Instead of opening cabinets randomly as we need them, the cabinet package can be staged according to each wall or cabinet run.

We verify cabinet numbers against the plan and identify important pieces such as refrigerator panels, sink bases, drawer bases, fillers, end panels and island cabinets before installation progresses too far.

This is also the time to look for shipping damage or an incorrect cabinet.

Finding the wrong cabinet at the end of an installation can stop the entire kitchen.

Finding it before installation gives the builder or supplier an opportunity to solve the problem while the crew continues working.


Step 2: Establishing Level and Finding the High Point

One of the biggest mistakes that can be made during cabinet installation is assuming that a new house automatically has perfectly level floors and perfectly straight walls.

It doesn’t.

Even in new construction, minor differences in framing, drywall and concrete or subfloor elevations are normal.

We use a laser and levels to establish reference points throughout the room before setting the cabinet run.

Finding the high point of the floor is particularly important.

Cabinets can be shimmed upward where necessary. They cannot easily be lowered below the floor.

Starting from the correct elevation prevents problems later with countertops, appliance heights and cabinets that appear to rise or fall as you look across the kitchen.


Step 3: Setting the Base Cabinets

Our typical installation sequence begins with the base cabinets.

Base cabinets establish most of the physical footprint of the kitchen, including the sink location, range opening, dishwasher opening, refrigerator relationship and island position.

We start from a critical reference point identified on the plan and work outward through the cabinet run.

Each cabinet is checked for level and plumb before it is permanently secured.

Adjacent cabinet face frames are brought together carefully so the faces remain flush rather than having one cabinet sitting slightly forward or backward from the next.

Where necessary, shims are used behind and below cabinets to compensate for variations in the wall or floor.

Cabinets are then properly fastened into the wall framing using cabinet-rated structural fasteners rather than ordinary drywall screws.

As the run progresses, we continuously check the entire installation rather than treating every cabinet as an individual box.

That distinction is important.

A cabinet can technically be level by itself while still creating a poor overall cabinet run.

What ultimately matters is that the entire kitchen reads correctly when countertops, doors, drawers, appliances and trim are installed.


Appliance Openings Have to Be Checked During Installation

Ranges, dishwashers, refrigerators and microwaves all affect cabinet placement.

An installer cannot simply assume that because the drawing shows a 30-inch opening, the cabinets will automatically produce the correct finished opening.

We measure these areas during installation.

A small layout error multiplied across several cabinets can create a major problem by the time the crew reaches the appliance opening.

Checking dimensions as the installation progresses helps prevent that.

This becomes especially important around ranges, refrigerators and dishwasher openings where tolerances matter.


Step 4: Installing the Kitchen Island

Many of the new construction kitchens we install include an island or peninsula.

The island has to relate correctly to the rest of the kitchen, not simply look centered from one viewing angle.

We use the cabinet plan and reference measurements from the installed perimeter cabinets to establish its location.

Walkway dimensions, countertop overhangs, appliance doors, sink locations and electrical or plumbing penetrations can all affect island positioning.

Once its final location has been established, the cabinets are connected, aligned and secured using the appropriate anchoring method for the structure and floor assembly.

The island is then checked from several directions.

If an island is several inches out of position, the problem becomes extremely noticeable once the countertops are installed.

Step 5: Installing the Upper Cabinets

After the base cabinet layout has been established, our team moves to the upper cabinets.

This is another area where accuracy matters.

The upper cabinets must remain level across the wall while maintaining the correct relationship with the base cabinets, range, refrigerator, microwave and any finished panels.

We establish a level reference line and locate the framing behind the drywall.

With a two-person crew, cabinets can be positioned safely while the second installer verifies alignment and begins fastening.

Doors may be removed when appropriate to reduce weight and provide easier access to the cabinet interior during installation.

As adjoining cabinets are installed, their face frames are aligned, clamped where appropriate and connected so the cabinet faces produce one clean, continuous installation.

We continue checking level throughout the run rather than relying exclusively on the first cabinet.

Professional Cabinet Installation Requires the Right Tools

Cabinet installation is one of those trades where a relatively small collection of the right tools can dramatically improve installation speed and accuracy.

A typical professional cabinet installation setup includes:

  • Laser level and quality 4-foot and 6-foot levels
  • Tape measures and layout tools
  • Impact driver and drill
  • Cabinet-rated installation screws
  • Clamps for aligning cabinet face frames
  • Wood shims
  • Stud finder and framing-location tools
  • Cabinet jack or appropriate lifting equipment when needed
  • Oscillating multi-tool
  • Circular saw, track saw or table saw for fillers and panels
  • Miter saw for crown, toe kick, shoe and trim
  • Finish nailers
  • Jigsaw

Step 6: Vanities and Additional Cabinetry

Once the primary kitchen cabinet installation is complete, our team can move into the bathrooms and set the vanity cabinets.

The principles are similar to kitchen cabinetry.

We verify the location against plumbing rough-ins, check the floor and wall, level and shim the vanity as necessary, secure it to framing and confirm the opening is ready for the vanity top and plumbing connection.

On new construction projects with several bathrooms, having the same installation crew complete the kitchen cabinets and vanities can help maintain consistency throughout the home.


Step 7: Crown Molding, Toe Kicks, Shoe and Scribe Molding

Cabinet boxes may be installed, but the kitchen isn’t finished yet.

Finish trim is what helps turn individual cabinet boxes into a completed cabinet package.

Depending on the kitchen specifications, we may return to install cabinet crown molding, toe kicks, shoe molding, fillers and scribe molding.

This work typically adds approximately 2–4 hours for our two-person team on a standard new construction kitchen, although larger or more customized kitchens can require considerably more time.

Crown molding requires accurate measuring and cutting, especially where cabinet heights, wall conditions or outside corners change.

Toe kick covers the cabinet bases and helps create a continuous finished appearance.

Scribe molding is especially important where cabinets meet walls that are not perfectly straight. Instead of leaving an inconsistent gap between a cabinet and drywall, the trim provides a cleaner transition.

These details may only represent a few inches of material, but they have an outsized impact on how professional the completed kitchen looks.
