You use your shower every day — it’s one of the most used areas in your home. But when was the last time you really inspected what’s behind the walls?
If your bathroom still has its original tile from the 1970s to early 2000s, there’s a high chance it was built without modern waterproofing. That means what you can’t see — moisture, mold, and rot behind the walls — could be silently causing damage and costing you money with every shower.
Why This Matters: Most Showers from the 70s–90s Were Never Waterproofed Correctly
Modern waterproofing materials like Schluter membranes, Wedi boards, and solid-surface panels didn’t exist or weren’t widely used until the last 15–20 years.
Back then, most showers were built by:
Installing tile directly onto green board drywall or cement board
Using basic grout with no sealant
Relying only on caulk to stop water at seams
Over time, water seeps through these materials, especially as grout or caulk begins to crack. Without a waterproof barrier behind it, there’s nothing stopping that moisture from spreading into your wall cavities, wood framing, insulation, or subfloor.

5 Signs Your Shower Might Be Hiding Costly Damage
Before things get worse, here’s what you can check right now — no tools required:
1. Crumbling or Missing Grout
Check between the tiles. If the grout is cracked, flaking, or missing altogether, it’s likely water is slipping through every time you shower.
What this means: The grout is no longer sealing your walls. Even a pinhole-sized crack can send moisture behind the tile.
2. Soft or Spongy Walls
Gently push on the lower corners of the shower wall, near fixtures or niches. If the wall moves, feels soft, or sounds hollow, there’s likely rot in the backer board.
What this means: Water has soaked into the substrate behind the tile and is degrading the structure underneath. That’s when mold starts to grow, especially in warm, dark conditions.
3. Black or Cracked Caulk
Caulk is often used around the base of the shower, in corners, and around fixtures. If you see blackened caulk, cracks, or peeling edges — it’s no longer doing its job.
What this means: Water is likely leaking through these joints, especially at the wall-to-floor transition. This is one of the most common failure points we see during inspections.
4. Loose or Hollow-Sounding Tiles
Lightly tap on the tiles with your knuckles. A hollow sound or movement indicates the tile has detached from the wall behind it.
What this means: The adhesive or wall itself has failed — often due to water damage weakening the material. Left unchecked, this leads to full tile failures and serious hidden issues.
5. Visible Mold, Mildew, or Staining
Check for dark discoloration in grout lines, caulk, or on the ceiling or wall outside the shower. Also check the ceiling below the bathroom (if applicable).
What this means: Persistent mildew or black spots are signs of moisture build-up. Water stains outside the shower suggest it’s already leaking into surrounding areas.
The Danger of DIY Fixes That Only Mask the Problem
It’s tempting to re-caulk or re-grout a tile shower when it starts to show age — and while that might look better temporarily, it doesn’t address the root problem.
If water has already penetrated the surface and caused damage behind the tile, surface fixes are just buying time — and allowing the damage to spread.
